Prepare NOW To Engage in Next Series of Boundary Town Meetings

Contributed by Marie Sudik

Fairfax County Public Schools will be conducting a boundary study of the Hayfield Secondary, Lake Braddock Secondary, and South County Secondary Schools. The focus of the study is the relief of overcrowding at South County Secondary School.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has scheduled two "town meetings" as part of the boundary study process affecting these three schools. Please make the time to attend these meetings in order to offer input on the boundary process. The meetings are scheduled for:

Tuesday, October 10
Wednesday, November 1

All town meetings will start at 7:30 p.m. at South County Secondary School auditorium.

The FCPS School Board has been busy over the summer planning for the boundary study. Their direction to FCPS Facilities Staff (as stated in the May 8 School Board Work Session minutes) is that any boundary recommendation resulting from this study:

• Should not cause, or leave, schools overcrowded;
• Should provide for equal utilization of the capacity at all three schools;
• To the extent reasonable, should provide a demographic balance.

At School Board work sessions, the Board has discussed with FCPS Facilities staff some options for boundary shifts. They have discussed the traditional boundary shifts based on geographic boundaries. They are also considering taking the middle school grades out of South County Secondary and splitting the students between Hayfield Secondary and Lake Braddock Secondary.

Additionally, the FCPS School Board has hired a consulting firm, McKibben Demographic Research, to review FCPS student projection methodology and accuracy rates to determine whether improvements could be made in student enrollment projections. It is anticipated that this effort will provide input into this fall’s enrollment projection updates; however, there is no guarantee this research study will be ready to be used by FCPS Facilities Staff for the fall boundary study.

The Hayfield Pyramid community must come together and have our collective voices heard by the School Board. Since the last boundary change in the 2005-06 school year (when South County Secondary first opened), Hayfield Secondary has evolved into a wonderful community school. In order to maintain that community feeling AND to keep the school crowding down, the local community must engage and be involved in this boundary study during the upcoming months.

Help is needed to spread the word about the upcoming study and potential impacts on our community. If you wish to serve on a committee to help with this effort, please contact Marie Sudik at msudik@cox.net or at 703-971-5341. Thank you!
